Painting!

Today Room 8 got to have a play with some paint!

We learnt how to create a tint. This is when you add white to a colour.

We also made shades. This is when you add black to a colour.

We were amazed how many different colours we could make from brown! When a picture is all one colour, but different tints and shades we call it monochromatic.

LJ, Savannah and Ardyn won the prize for having the cleanest pallet :)

Then we had a chance to experiment with mixing colours and creating texture. We tried to use our paintbrush to make our paint look like feathers.

Next we will start painting our birds!

Heart Foundation Visit

Over the last few weeks we have had Brogan from the heart foundation working with us. She has taught us about the 4 main food groups and the importance of a healthy, balanced diet.

In her session on Monday she taught us how to read food labels. We know:

  • You should look at the per 100g column on the label.
                • To be healthy the food needs to have less than 10g of fat, less than 10g of sugar, more than 5g of fibre and less than 400mg of salt.
We were shocked at how much sugar is in common drinks. We know that water and milk are the best choices for healthy teeth and a healthy body.

We look forward to putting our new learning into practice  when we visit the supermarket on the 13th of April.

Some of today's work....

We are making progress! Check out some of what we got up to today...

Art exhibition.....take two.

Change of plans.....While we thought that spraying dye created a really cool background, we all decided that it wasn't quite the look we were after. Charles and Janine Williams use spray paint to get their bold, bright backgrounds.....so now we are too!
This is a new and exciting experience for us all.

Here is Ardyn working on his piece...

Lemon Writing

Room 8 were given the challenge of SHOWING that lemon tastes sour rather than TELLING the reader it tastes sour.  To do our research, we first needed to taste lemon (of course!). Don't you love the facials?!

Check out a few examples of the amazing writing that followed:

My face scrunched up as the evil, sour lemon looked at me. I slowly put it closer to my lips. My mouth opened wide. As my front teeth touched the lemon I screamed "Ewwwwww! Ahhhhk! Blahhhh!" Tears flowed down my face. It felt like someone tipped a bucket of acid into my mouth. I tried to keep my body still, but I couldn't. It was too sour. I said to myself "I'm never going to eat lemon again!"
 By Kaz

"Curse you Miss Bedford! Curse you!!! Why, oh why does it have to end this way?" I dramatically moaned as my evil, despicable teacher forced me to swallow the wrinkled, rough, uneven sided lemon.
As the juicy, acid filled horror, trickled down my throat, I tried to control my emotions, but it was just way too challenging.
While it slithered down my oesophagus my eyes attached and didn't release.
My hands curled up over my mouth to hold the tongue twisting fruit as I took another bite, pretending to be Tarzan and visualising the lemon being a cruel baby banana.
My eyes turned soggy like grass sprinklers activating. Finally it vanished into my stomach. I carried myself with pride as I finished the horror and slam dunked the skin into the bin.
Thank goodness it's over.
By Savannah

"GULP! goes the lemon lava through my throat and down into my stomach. My heart pumped ten times faster than usual. My face scrunched up like I was angry at my sisters. My eyes went big like a sword had just been injected through me. The lemon looks like yellow turtle hiding scared of the teeth that stand upon it.
I took a lick. It tasted fine, but then I put it next to my teeth and took a big bite. "Oolllll! This tastes terrible," I said in disgust. I almost puked. It tasted like me spewing up then swallowing it down my throat again - but worse.
If your teacher forces you to eat a sour lemon, pretend you're sick, because you WILL be after eating that lemon!

Way to go Jena!

Well done to our gorgeous Jena who received the Duffy award this week for her fantastic poetry writing.
You should be super proud of yourself Jena!

Here is her 'Eavesdropping' poem:

I hear annoying seagulls squawking in the blue sky,
the big, salty waves splashing in my face,
and my dad shouting "WOOHOO!!!" as he rides some humongous waves.

I hear my brother Phoenix screaming as he shakes a crab off his hand,
beautiful shells getting crushed underneath my feet,
and the rusty scooter zooming through the leaves on the road.

I hear the clear water drip onto the floor,
the cicadas sing "Creek....creek....creek" all day long,
and my sister crying because she scraped her foot on the road.

I hear myself moaning as my dad starts the van getting ready to go.

....We have started!

On Friday a few of us began to create stencils, and dye our back ground for our art exhibition art.
Lots of planning, concentration, mess and excitement!

SHOW don't TELL

Today Room 8 were learning to use SHOW not TELL in our writing. This means instead of telling the reader what is happening, we make a picture in their mind by describing what we can see, hear, feel, taste, touch, our actions and what we might say or think.

Room 8 were given the sentence I hurt my leg to improve.

Here are some awesome examples...

I saw a stream of red blood crawling down my knee. I shouted "Help!" as the gooey blood was tickling me in red pain. It felt like a swarm of bees stinging me in painful attacks.
By LJ and David

"Why, why, WHY did I do this to myself?" I thought. I glanced down quickly and what I saw was...blood that flowed down my leg like a raindrop. I stood up and felt the stinging pain while I walked to the office. I walked so painfully that it felt like the office as a mile away.
By Samantha and Ellen

My knee was aching with bursts of pain. I saw blood dripping down like the rain. I zoomed inside to get my first aid kit to clean my knee. At that moment, I yelped for my lovely mum.
By Nevaeh and Tarita

I thought it was a little graze...but as soon as I looked down, there was blood trickling down my leg like a waterfall. I was running around crazy like a lunatic. It felt like I had fallen into a ravine full of deadly hounds. The pain felt like I had just got stabbed in the knee by a sword.
By Hayden and Augustina

You were all so focused and worked so hard today.
Keep it up my clever Room 8 writers :)

Powerful Verbs

Verbs are action words.
We were learning about two types... powerful verbs and weak verbs.
Powerful verbs make stories interesting and gives the reader more information.
We wrote eavesdropping poems with powerful verbs in them.

By Jena and Micheal

here we are highlighting our powerful verbs
