Celebrating Matariki

In Room 8 we have been learning about stories and traditions associated with Matariki.

We learnt that Matariki can be celebrated by getting together with friends and whanau to share stories, skills and kai -  so Room 8 decided to do just that! We invited our buddy class Room 13 to come and join us for a some Matariki fun.

In the morning we put our reading and maths skills to use by following a recipe to make pikelets.

When our buddy class arrived in the middle block, we learnt how to sing Tirama Tirama - the Maori version of Twinkle Twinkle. Then we blessed the kai before going outside to eat it in the beautiful sunshine.

After that we spent time reading our buddy the story Matariki Breakfast and sharing the story of the Seven Sisters which we had retold in the form of a story board.

Finally, we finished of by teaching our buddy how to make an origami star which we then decorated.

What a wonderful time we had sharing and learning with our friends from Room 13.

Meet the Dinosaurs! Buddy time with Room 13

This week we had the exciting job of hosting assembly with our buddy class Room 13. Because the juniors have been learning about dinosaurs, we met with our buddy class to do some talking and learning about dinosaurs. With our buddy, we chose our favourite dinosaur, did a bit of research and talking together then presented our information using the app Chatterpix.

It was lots of fun!

We also learnt this song and dance which we performed to the school before having the whole school stand and join in with us.

The children in Room 13 and Room 8 did a fantastic job on stage!
Well done to those children who were brave enough to speak in front of the school.
We are very proud of you all!

Buddy Reading!

We had a lovely time reading with our buddies in Room 13 on Friday. Room 8 went to the library early to choose a book that we knew our buddy would enjoy and that we could confidently read.
Our focus when reading today was to make our words flow smoothly and to add expression, so our buddy would enjoy the story.

Latrell, Gordon and Markell even read a story aloud to us all.

We finished off our time together by drinking milk under the oak tree and a fun game of 'Cat and Mouse'.

See you again next week Room 13!

End of term buddy class fun!

To celebrate a great first term, Room 8 and 13 spent our last buddy class session cooking and eating!

We all had a job to do...
Cooking pikelets

Making a fruit salad

 Making milo milkshakes
Serving food

and of course...we all had to clean up afterwards!

Talking, listening, reading, maths (doubling the recipe required some careful calculations!), sharing, laughing and best of all...EATING!

We look forward to a fun term 2 with our buddy class Room 13 😊

Buddy Class Easter Scavenger Hunt 2018

What a fun day we had with our buddy class on Thursday!

We worked in pairs or small groups to complete a scavenger hunt. We had to read clues which sent us all around the school completing challenges. Some of these challenges included making up a handshake, completing an obstacle course, asking each other questions and recording the answers, identifying features on the New Zealand flag, collecting natural resources from our environment and practising cartwheels!

Our focus was doing lots of talking with our Room 13 buddy, giving lots of encouragement and of course having lots of FUN!

We finished the fun with an Easter treat, some music and  Easter colouring.

We love spending time with our buddy class!

We would like to wish Room 13 as well as all our whanau and friends a safe and happy Easter!
