Totara Park 2018

Room 8 had the BEST day last Friday on our whole school trip to Totara Park.

From our bus ride with our buddy class R13...

To going on a big walk and climbing some trees...

Hunting for cicada shells and building pretend campfires...

Conquering the 100 Steps and spotting kereru along the way!

Then lastly, cooling of with a well deserved swim...

What a wonderful day of sun, friendship, bonding and creating lovely memories.

Green Fingers!

Room 8 were excited to pull on gardening gloves and get into the garden last week.

Things had gone a bit crazy in the garden during the school holidays and our mission was to tame the jungle.

There was some great team work as we struggled to pull out some huge plants...
We made some interesting discoveries....

It was great to take our learning outside. We made interesting observations about a range of bugs we came across, discussed the root systems of plants and how weeds impact a garden. We talked about composting and also about turning the soil and letting it rest before we plant some seedlings later this week.

We will keep you updated on our progress.

Making Music with R13

Since our buddy class R13 is also exploring music as part of their Learning Pathways this term, we decided to meet in the music room this week.

We were exploring the chime bars and experimenting with the different sounds they could make. We made some short patterns together and had some sharing time at the end.

It was so much fun and we look forward to doing it again soon!

Let's get creating...

This week we finally started making the instruments which are part of our Creativity and Innovation learning. Things got messy...but things got creative! Fantastic teamwork, problem solving and construction Room 8!

And after the big tidy up... 😇

Coding in the classroom and Makey Makey fun!

As part of our learning pathways learning, Room 8 are busy working on a project which will be shared at our school wide 'Innovation and Creativity Expo' towards the end of the term.

A big part of our learning is centred around coding. Coding is when you give a computer a series of commands which it follows. Coding is what computer programmers use to create software. To write our code we use a great website called Scratch.

In this lesson we were learning to use the arrow keys and sound blocks to programme our computers to play a range of instrument sounds.

Once we had mastered this we made things even more fun by adding a Makey Makey.
A Makey Makey is a way of turning anything into buttons that control your computer. We swapped the arrow keys for playdough. This is what our learning looked like!

Here is Caitlin and Sulyne experimenting with using their bodies as conductors to control the sound

We are excited to share more of this learning with you at our expo

Creativity and Innovation

This term's learning pathway is 'Creativity and Innovation'.

We started off this topic with some creative painting.

Each person was given a letter to make using masking tape on a piece of blank paper. They were given a range of paints to use to decorate their letter with one catch - they weren't allowed to use paint brushes.

Some children collected sticks, rocks, feathers. Some used their fingers.

It was lots of messy, creative, innovative fun :)

This was our end result...
