Geometry - Geo City

This term we have been learning about geometry with a focus on naming and describing 2 and 3D shapes. We have been using the words vertex/vertices, edges and faces when talking about the properties of shapes. We made shapes using tooth pics and plastercine, we explored the prefixes of shapes such as deca, penta, octa and what they mean and we spent some time researching unusual shapes we had never heard of before.

We took our learning about shapes, combined it with our own creativity and created Geo City!
We spent time discussing and planning the types of things a city might have. We all chose a building then set to work planing what shapes we would need and what other features we would need to include. We also voted to agree on a name for our city.
This was a fun project that required lots of problem solving. Check us out hard at work...

We were very proud of our creations! We joined our squares together, added some more roads and road signs to create our final product.

Samoan Language Week 2020

We had a wonderful week celebrating Samoan Language week.

Samoan dancing, music, art, language and learning about Samoan traditions. So much vibrant learning.

A big fa'afetai lava to the gorgeous girls in Kahu 2 who put on a performance for us. What a treat!

Science

We have been having so much fun with science in Kahu 2.

We have explored fair testing, the scientific process and how to record it. We have also seen first hand the importance of a growth mindset and the bravery to ask questions and take risks. As we found out - new discoveries and learning wouldn't happen if scientists were afraid of getting things wrong!

Here we are learning about density and observing what happened when we poured food colouring and oil onto water.

We also explored chemical reactions when we observed what happened to an egg when we left it in different liquids for 3 days. We learnt that vinegar and orange juice have acid which reacts to the calcium carbonate in the egg shell dissolving in. The vinegar made the egg bouncy!

We learnt more about solvents, solutes and solutions when we made strawberry milk. Who knew science could be so delicious?!

Learning From Home

Wow! What an unusual few months it has been!  Term one was ticking along nicely until suddenly everything changed. On the 24th of March New Zealand schools closed as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

At 11.59 on the 25th of March New Zealand went into level 4 lock down in an attempt to break the chain of transmission of Covid 19 and save lives.

While we had a feeling this was going to happen, it still was a shock when it did.

So for Kahu 2 and the other children of BMPS, this meant learning looked quite different over the next few months!

Children had home learning packs provided by school and also from the government to work on and some children took part in online learning via Google Classroom.
This was an exciting new challenge for us all. As well as completing online assignments, we met on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Zoom sessions and also on Thursday where Sistema children would practise their music.

I am so super proud of the self motivation, hard work and dedication to learning shown by many Kahu 2 children during what was an unusual and often stressful time. I think you are amazing. A big thank you to your whanau at home for their support also.

Here are a few photos of our home learning.
